The Excursion will take us to Šibenik and to Krka waterfalls.

Šibenik (Renaissance city)Sibenik_-Source-Wikipedia_medium

First mentioned in royal documents in 1066, Šibenik is the country’s oldest native town on the coast. Originally developing around the castle of St. Michael, Šibenik grew haphazardly in medieval times, with a dense, interlocking web of houses and streets interspersed with resplendent ecclesiastical architecture. By the mid 17th century, the original castle had been supplemented by three additional defensive fortresses, as the town, by then an autonomous region within the Venetian state, sought to defend itself from the encroaching Ottoman Empire.

The town’s most celebrated feature is the Cathedral of St. James. Designed in the decorative Gothic style by Juraj Dalmatinac in the mid 15th century, to be completed fifty years later by Nikola Firentinac, the building is recognized as a masterpiece of Croatian architecture, built entirely of stone using unique construction techniques.

Today, despite the effects of time and war, Šibenik has managed to preserve its character and is now a center of tourism and culture. For the past 40 years, the town has held the annual International Children’s Festival, where groups from around the world perform in the streets.

Krka (National Park)

Krka_-Source-Wikipedia-K_-Korlevic_mediumThe realm of the Krka River, a magnificent karstic beauty traveling two-thirds of its way to the sea through canyons, is the complete opposite of the Kornati. On its green path, it has seven falls, the last of which is Skradinski buk, with an average flow of 55 cubic meters of water per second. The Krka National Park is rich in flora and fauna. It is home to 222 bird species, making it one of the most valuable ornithological areas in Europe. You can visit it by boat, car or foot. Make sure you visit the ethno museum on one of the old mills. The Krka National Park also has the only falcon-training center in Croatia, with demonstrations of falconry and trainers’ skills.
